WHO report says that 36% Indians suffer from clinical depression which means more than one-third of us have our own looney tales to recount… Gawd iz great, Gawd iz great!
My good friend Anjuli shared two separate slogans with me which makes profoundly insightful reading when read together – politicians divide us AND terrorists unite us! To me it sounds intuitively correct, gospel like and axiomatic. However, being left-brain dominant, rational, analytical, Descartesque’ idiot that I am, suffering from the chronic neurotic dementia caused by excessive over indulgence with the idea of 'cogito ergo sum', this is not sufficient for me. I need to see the direct cognitive relationship between the two.
So, delving deep into my immense resources on politics, sociology, culture, psychology, anthropology, philosophy, epistemology, topology, graphology, immunology, urology, gynecology and sentology, I have finally found the connection. (phis-phus-phis-phus-phis-phus… 5 deep breaths… still panting!)
Politicians divide us… into groups. Then one group (the screwer) is supported by the politicians to screw the other (screwee) for their collective gain. Now, when the screwee group is screwed over a long time without respite, they get into a collective and endemic group depression which ultimately becomes a bipolar disease with its own manic-depressive episodes. Manic episodes give rise to terrorism and depressive episodes miraculously translate into mass suicides.
In either case, when the tectonic plates of political divide thus collide, Tsunami like forces are unleashed making it imperative to now unite the screwee group with the main stream through inclusive growth initiatives and outreach programs (terrorism unites, you see!)
… And viola! With its principles of equality and freedom restored, Democracy itself gets a new lease of life… Till such time politicians create the next divide (which is almost instantaneously) ushering the next great depression in yet another screwee group… till the cycle completes… and repeats… and completes… and repeats… Untill, eventually, in the true spirit of Democracy, we have all equally been a screwer and a screwee without any discrimination.
So, in the final analysis you will conclude that, as one of the commentators said in ToI today, DEMOCRACY WORKS BECAUSE OF DEPRESSION… No depression, no terrorism, no unity, no integration, no inclusion, no equalization, no politics, no democracy!
… And therefore, with utter gratitude and sheer delirium I look at the WHO report that says 36% Indians suffer from clinical depression, cast a heavenly gaze and proclaim - Gawd tussi great ho ji… aapne humein world #1 banaya ji! Depression mein bhi aur democracy mein bhi (given that we are the most populous democracy in the world)
P.S. Finally, I would like to propose a collective, committed national initiative to increase this 36% to 50% by 2020. Please join me at Jantar-Mantar on 15th August when I am taking out a MAAYUSI morcha (inspired by Besharmi Morcha) to pressurize the government to introduce a Jan Maayusi (abetment and precipitation) Bill in the Monsoon session of parliament. Let that be our most important national strategic goal? Amen…

Rakhi Season, etc...
I confess : The photo has nothing to do with the contents of this blog post. This is just the excellent influence of Delhi Times / HT City on my gullible mind...
I am also feeling a tad embarrassed at the naughty twist this photograph has given to the otherwise innocent name of this blog... I mean, I thought DE GHUMA KE was perfectly above board...
Anyway, Rakhi Sawant wants to marry Baba RD and Balkrishan is absconding. Maybe he had the insider information... Come to think of it, if the marriage actually happens, Baba RD may find it difficult to remain vegetarian. Also Kapal Bhati may lose it's prestigious morning slot to Shavasan and might itself become a nocturnal exercise...
... BJP has earned additional rights to whiplash an already beleaguered Congress at the throw away price of a Yeddy. The bigger point, however is that Yeddyji has been claimed by the old and supposedly toothless Lokpal! Annaji, please don't get so worked up. You don't have to worry about a stronger Lokpal Bill (with or without PMji). Even a Jokepal is good enough if he knows how to growl at the right time. The political dogs will do the rest by screwing, tearing and gnawing each other...
... Finally, Mr Krishna and Ms Rabbani! Give me a break. Is it an even match? Diplomacy gai tel lene. Gehri chaal hai Pakistaniyon ki. Hamesha humein aise hi surprise karte hain. Kabhi mulla bhej denge, kabhi general aur kabhi khatun. Koi tedha medha khusat buddha bhejen toh hum barabri bhi karen...

Mother Of All Sutras…
Here comes the ultimate epiphany…
While you marveled at the length, breadth, depth, in fact the whole biomechanical engineering of Kama Sutra and wondered on the very Indian ability to detail the alchemy of desire, take this. Kama Sutra is actually a small part of a much larger body of Indian work, a mother of all Sutras which is still under creation and is being revealed even as we speak.
In fact, there are whole lot of diligent servants of Bharat Mata who have taken upon themselves to complete this Sutra and finish the unfinished agenda of last 5000 years within this lifetime itself. Our glorious sanskriti (culture), sabhyata (civilization), parampara (traditions) and darshan (philosophy) are forever indebted to these advanced souls. This blog entry is my little homage to them and the great Sutra…
Kama in Sanskrit means desire which includes every kind of desire. And Kama is good, mind it! (unless, of course, you are influenced by that grand dad of all demagogues, that Shakya Muni Siddhartha Gautam, the Buddha). In fact, Vedas have listed Kama along with Artha (money ) and Dharma (duty ) as a step to Moksha (salvation)
The great Kama Sutra by and large restricts itself to carnal desires. The bigger and all encompassing mother of all Sutras not only covers all the infinite dimensions of desire but also of money (Artha).
Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome on the world stage, right from the womb of the greatest civilization on Earth, the mother of all Sutras – The CORRUPT SUTRA… dhan-te-nan!!
The pyrotechnics, the confetti, the media, the works! … Let the show play up to the occasion… The oomph, the glam, the hype and hoopla…
… As you savoured (awestruck obviously) the great exposition of the principles and nuances of this sutra by the Rajas and Babas and Babus and Netas and Mantris and Santris and Sahukaars and Kalakaars and Vyaparis and Patwaris on the national media in last few weeks and months, I can bet half my pony tail that each one of you would have felt a deep moving urge to belong to such august company, to contribute your two bits...
But alas! You the unqualified, the uninitiated outsider. Take heart. There is enough space and opportunity for all. Nothing is lost. I suggest a simple discipline for next 21 days post which anyone can master of the mesmerizing web of Corrupt Sutra.
Every morning get up early at 9.30 am. Light a good Cuban cigar. Inhale deeply. While exhaling expound one of the four Beej (seed) Mantras of Corrupt Sutra - Om Corruptaye Namah! OR Corrupto Devo Bhava! OR Aham Corrupt Asmi! OR Corrupt Twam Asi! Do it for 30 mts or till the cigar lasts, whichever is later.
Then take a Swarovski crystal glass and fill it with your preferred single malt whisky (suggested at least 50 years vintage, charcoal). Sit comfortably in front of your home theatre system with the latest Bollywood item number playing in HD. Take a lazy sip, rotate it on your tongue for exactly 58 nanoseconds and as you gulp it down chant one of the following Japa Mantras - Dushto Hum! Luchcho Hum! Kapto Hum! Corrupto Hum!! Remember, Japa Mantras have to be repeated again and again, and the more you repeat the better it is for you. At least one cycle of 420 mantras is a must everyday.
Needless to say that with devoted practice, soon these mantras will start resonating in every part of your being… And once that happens, the Chandalini (not to be confused with Kundalini) within you will awaken and unbridled corruption of the highest order will start flowing effortlessly out of you.
… And that day, as Kipling said, “you will be a man, my son! And the whole world will be yours” (or something like that)
Mera Bharat Mahaan!
Jai Hind!
P.S. Just to make my own little contribution to the cause, I am compiling a Corrupto Sahastra Namam… Your help in compiling the revered names will be greatly appreciated. Starting, in no particular order, Harshad Mehta, Win Chaddha, ……….

The Indus Innovator
Innovation is such a universally exciting and wonderfully sexy thing that, perhaps, a new age Kama Sutra should be written on it. A sort of compendium of techniques, methods and ‘postures’ for sustained performance or instant creative orgasm, as the case may be... I tell you the world needs it and needs it more than Viagra because when it comes to innovation, getting it ‘up’ is a lesser problem than to make it ‘running’.
And who can teach innovation better than the Indians? Never mind the constant laments of intellectuals like Pavan K Verma and many others who in their pseudo-erudism (my term, erudite+urbanism) just love to doubt our innovative jeans (or is it genes?). The reasons why we as people are so innovative are plenty and obvious. But I am a man of fundamentals…
The first key driver of innovation is necessity. Isn’t it obvious that we Indians are the most experienced and qualified in the area of necessity? After all, we spend our lives bothering about necessities. Everything across the five levels of Maslow’s hierarchy is a perpetual necessity and that too, all at once (that’s something even Maslow would have found hard to grasp!). Example : a gum chewing ipod wielding girl wearing a low cut jeans and spaghetti top giving alms to a beggar, while at the same time avoiding to get raped by other beggars, on her way to the temple! How much necessity is that in one mundane act of living?
Nothing that’s necessary to live can be taken as given in this country. Rather, it is given that everything has to be taken through ever handy imagination and resourcefulness… Which is what makes us so incredibly innovative!
The second key driver of innovation is thinking out of the box. And this is where we Indians are specially endowed. Our ancient culture and our immense religion, not to mention our karmic / genetic causal ontological reality (?&%#$@!?) has made us superbly poised for innovation. You see, thinking out of the box presupposes a box! We as people have never been boxed-in. We are free body and souls which, by the way, is possible only in India. We do not operate in structures and we naturally rebel against rules. We believe, to somewhat borrow Khalil Gibran’s words, that law is a cage in which the bird of our true nature can open its wings but it cannot fly. But we are free birds… free to piss and shit anywhere we want, free to chirp and quack any nonsense to anyone, free to nest anywhere (why do you call it encroachment, idiot)
You still don’t get it, you moron? When nothing is structured and everything is an amorphous soup in one endless ambiguity, nothing can be anticipated, predicted or repeated with any degree of certainty. Every act of living then, by definition, becomes innovative. You may take the same route to office everyday but you still need to be innovative because every day there is a new traffic jam at a new place on the route and for a new reason (or no reason). If we, who live in and thrive on so much of new and unexplored every breath of our lives, are not innovative, who on Earth will be?
In fact, we have mastered this innovation thing so much that this is now institutionalized and ingrained into our kids from the beginning. Just a small (but poignant) example of this is that every government when it comes to power, innovates and can come up with its own version of History to be taught to kids. So much so that by the time a kid passes school, he/she has learnt a beautiful lesson that history is fluid and pliable (much in line with our day to day living unstructured ambiguity) and that each of us has a right, neigh obligation, to create his own innovative version. Consequently, no other country can boast of so many people holding so many innovative yet equally accepted versions of their shared history!
Which brings me to this important conversation these days about need to fund innovation in India. Forceful suggestions are being made on how current funding climate is un-encouraging of and insufficient for innovations we need. I for one do not agree with it. There are big time success stories which no one is acknowledging. See how Niira Radia’s innovations in liaison and lobbying model got funded… Or how A Raja and Shahid Balwa innovated on capital and debt structuring models… I am sure this may have been difficult in any other country. (BTW, the simultaneous use of ‘sure’ and ‘may’ in previous sentence is a proud Indian expression of ambivalence much needed to capture the overall essence / subtle context of innovation).
Still naysayers are saying that sufficient funding is not being done. Some people are just eternally and morbidly pessimists! I know one innovative product concept which was already successful in Europe, Americas and SE Asia and which was courageously introduced in India with such ingenuity that it got funding instantly. Another poignant example is of these good Samaritans who, inspired by Kapil Sibal, have started a K12 school with a ‘USP’ and ‘innovation’ derived out of a clever merging of some latest Ivy league research and some traditional Indian gurukul parampara. They got funded in a jiffy. Why, we have recently funded an innovative chain of women beauty parlors making serious contributions to women self-esteem and empowerment and riding on the subtle yet profound insight that most men under estimate the monthly parlor expenses of their partners! How much more innovation funding do you need?
But I agree on one thing. In a country where everyone is innovating every living breath (as I discussed and sealed previously), it is not possible to fund all innovations. Then there are freaks and idiots there. You got to draw a line somewhere after all.
Let me give you another example. I can say without any modesty and compunction that I have some expertise on innovation, funding and related issues. So what if it does not reflect in my company’s business numbers. After all what has expertise got to do with producing results? Anyways… Only last week I had this guy came to me through a friend’s reference asking for some advice. A seemingly nice and intelligent guy but such a disappointment.
For good 45 minutes he talked about his innovation. But more than the innovation, he kept digressing to social impact, making a difference and similar nonsense. It seemed the dude had landed straight from Mars. I mean, for all the education and fancy degrees, how could he be so naïve? He kept talking about innovative ways to feed hungry, innovative ways of teaching poor, bottom of the pyramid, blah blah blah! That’s no innovation. That’s bloody Mother Teresa!
Bottom line is that from Raja to Reliance, from Balwa to Bharti and from Telgi to Tata, true innovation is innovation to make money. Even the Prahlad guy who talked about bottom of pyramid, being true to the last worn out hems of his Indian jeans, was firmly focused about making money there. No more, no less. Period. And for such innovations (and there plenty in India at the moment) no funds and no resources are a constraint. Lord Kuber himself sees to it!
As for the rest (like my friend’s reference above), bundle them up and put them into a jail. For as they say in Hindi – one fish spoils the whole pond!
